A group of Independent Non-Conformist
worshippers have been meeting in Ryarsh since at least the early
19th Century. A building was leased in 1821 for 21 years and converted
for use as a chapel.
In 1853 the building was given over to Baptists who
had joined with churches from Borough Green, Chatham and West
Malling, there being no Baptist meeting place in Ryarsh.
A Church was formed and so began the history of Baptists
in Ryarsh. When the lease expired in 1863, the current chapel
was built and opened for worship.
One of the longest pastorates was that of Stephen
Hover, pastor for 40 years until he died in 1967. He was a well
known and loved local character.
